Truths are always truths no matter when they are said

"It is not high time for the people of this country explicitly to declare, whether they will be freemen or slaves? It is an important question which ought to be decided. It concerns us more than anything in this life. The salvation of our souls is interested in this event. For wherever tyranny is established, immorality of every kind comes in like a torrent. It is in the interest of tyrants to reduce the people to ignorance and vice. For they cannot live in any country where virtue and knowledge prevail. The religion and public liberty of a people are intimately connected; their interest are interwoven, they cannot subsist separately; and therefore they rise and fall together. For this reason, it is always observable, that those who are combined to destroy the people's liberties. practice every art to poison their morals. How greatly then does it concern us, at all events, to put a stop to the progress of tyranny."

Laws we can all understand

I have been thinking quite a bit lately about Rep. Conyers comments about "Reading the bill " .
For those that missed it his comments came from a question about reading the healthcare bill to which he responded
“I love these members, they get up and say, ‘Read the bill!' What good is reading the bill if it’s a thousand pages and you don’t have two days and two lawyers to find out what it means after you read the bill? "
Conyers caught a lot of flack about this comment but I think he was more right than he knows.
Our Republic is supposed to be laws for the people by the people.
Why is it that most of our laws are hard to understand even for a team of lawyers.
Let's step back and look at this problem.
We provide a free 12th grade education for every citizen and have for years. Let's consider that an education level of an average 12th grade level is our national average. Anyone that does not have that education level is either mentally disabled or has nobody to blame but themselves.
Now since the laws are for the citizens we should all be able to understand them.
All laws should be written on a 12th grade level. All old laws should be re-written to that level as well.
Until then we are a nation of laws that nobody really understands , not a nation of laws.

Some may wonder why I tagged tort reform in the bottom of this article, very simple with all of our laws written in an way that makes them easy to understand I think it will cut way down on frivolous lawsuits as well as seemingly endless legal maneuvers with the main purpose being the increase of billable hours.
